President Donald Trump on Monday indicated he would accept the terms of a GOP-negotiated deal to end the ongoing government shutdown, including provisions that required the administration to rehire workers laid off during the funding lapse.

“I’ll abide by the deal. The deal is very good,” he said, according to the New York Post.

His remarks come as the shutdown cleared 40 days and set the record for the longest funding lapse in U.S. history. Republicans promised Democrats a vote on extending healthcare subsidies but did not promise to support such a measure.

Democrats initially asserted they were fighting to lower healthcare costs by rolling back cuts that Republicans made in the One Big, Beautiful Bill while Republicans contended that they were actually seeking to fund healthcare for illegal aliens.
