President Donald Trump on Tuesday formally signed an agreement with Denmark and Greenland establishing U.S. control over Greenland's security, ending a longstanding diplomatic row.

Trump had initially sought to buy Greenland outright during both of his terms in office. But Denmark and Greenland alike rejected that proposal. Instead, all parties signed on to a deal to expand American security control over Greenland and bar non-NATO bases on the island.

Trump signed the agreement with the prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland, while in New York City to address the United Nations.

During his speech to the UN General Assembly, he also announced that the U.S. would build two military bases on Greenland. At present, Denmark, Norway, Canada, the U.S., and Russia are the only sovereign nations with a meaningful presence in the Arctic Ocean.

Greenland is an autonomous region within the Kingdom of Denmark.
