President Donald Trump on Monday vowed that he would "liberate" Washington, D.C., ahead of a press conference on crime in the city and amid reports that he plans to federalize the nation's capital.

"Washington, D.C. will be LIBERATED today! Crime, Savagery, Filth, and Scum will DISAPPEAR," he posted. "I will, MAKE OUR CAPITAL GREAT AGAIN! The days of ruthlessly killing, or hurting, innocent people, are OVER! I quickly fixed the Border (ZERO ILLEGALS in last 3 months!), D.C. is next!!! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DJT."

Trump previously threatened to federalize D.C. if the city did not crack down on groups of criminal "youths" terrorizing the city.

Earlier in his term, he pressured Mayor Muriel Bowser to crack down on the homeless camps in the city.
