President Donald Trump on Wednesday celebrated what he called a "highly productive meeting" between special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"My Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff, just had a highly productive meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Great progress was made! Afterwards, I updated some of our European Allies. Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" he posted on Truth Social.

The announcement came the same day that Trump imposed 50% tariffs on India due to its continued purchase of Russian oil. Trump has sought negotiate an end to the Ukraine War, though Russian gains on the battlefield appear to have rendered Moscow somewhat less receptive to a speedy resolution.

Trump did not offer any insight on a possible compromise to end the conflict.
