Trump within single digits of Biden in deep-blue New York: poll
Bolstering Trump's performance appears to be a more solidified GOP, which has rallied behind its likely nominee more so than the Democrats.
Former President Donald Trump appears poised to make New York competitive in the 2024 election, a recent survey has revealed.
Typically a left-wing bastion, New York has not backed a Republican for president since 1984, though Trump has repeatedly touted a "heavy play" for his home state this cycle.
Biden led Trump in the Empire State 47% to 39% among registered voters in the latest Siena College poll. In May, Biden led 47% to 38%.
The former president earned a 37% favorability rating in the survey, with 59% deeming him unfavorable. By contrast, Biden earned his lowest ever favorability rating in the survey of 42% favorable to 53% unfavorable.
Bolstering Trump's performance appears to be a more solidified GOP, which has rallied behind its likely nominee more so than the Democrats. Trump also appears to be scoring moderately well with minority voters.
"While Biden maintains the support of three-quarters of Democrats, Trump has support from 85% of Republicans and leads Biden 45-28% with independents,” Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg said. “A gender gap has reopened as men support Trump 46-42% and women favor Biden 51-33%. White voters are evenly divided. And while Biden has a commanding lead with non-white voters, Trump garners support from 29% of Black and 26% of Latino voters."
Conducted June 12-17, the survey questioned 805 registered voters in New York and has a margin of error of +/- 4.1%.
Trump has been adamant that he can win New York, highlighting the rising crime rates, concern over immigration, and noting former New York GOP Rep. Lee Zeldin's near-successful gubernatorial run in 2022.
"I believe we have a chance to win New York. I believe we have a chance to win New Jersey. If you look at Lee, he lost by a pretty close race. But it’s 100 times worse now than it was two years ago. Now, you have people—you have migrants living on Madison Avenue," he told Breitbart News in January.
