Vice President JD Vance on Thursday said that the makeup of the Supreme Court would remain at nine justices "so long as Republicans are in power."

His remarks came during the White House press briefing, in response to a question on the failure of a constitutional amendment vote to fix the number of justices on the top court at nine. The House failed to advance that measure on Wednesday.

"Our commitment in the Trump administration is we'd like to have nine Supreme Court justices," he said. "We also know the Democrats have explicitly promised that they will pack the United States Supreme Court."

"This is why I think the choice in this election is not between this set of policies that are good and this set of policies that are not so good," Vance went on. "The choice in the election really is between crazy people who are trying to rig the game and common sense people."

"How long will it last? I think frankly so long as Republicans are in power, we're gonna have a Supreme Court that is good and honest and fair in the Constitution," he concluded.

Vance made the remarks in the White House press briefing, marking his second appearance behind the podium.
