Protesters on Thursday gathered at the Michigan Capitol to rally against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the ongoing state of emergency and stay-at-home orders, saying it was time to reopen the state.

Carrying signs and demanding "freedom from tyranny," protesters were seen in photos not wearing masks or standing more than 6 feet from one another.

This protest was reportedly smaller than others that have taken place at the Capitol, however police said they confiscated an axe, and there were a couple of skirmishes.

At one point a fight broke out after a man carrying a garbage can filled with a sign, an ax and an American flag removed the flag from the can. Attached to the bottom of the flag was an unclothed doll with brown hair that was hanging from a noose.

The man fled to the lawn of the Capitol where Michigan State Police reportedly surrounded him.

The protest was the third such event in the past month. One protest involved gun-toting militia protesters spilled inside the Capitol, insisted on being allowed onto the House floor as lawmakers debated whether to extend Whitmer's emergency powers.
