Homophobic chants from Mexican soccer fans cuts short game against U.S. men’s team
Referees at the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League semifinal in Las Vegas, Nevada ended the United States men’s soccer team’s match against Mexico early due to repeated homophobic chanting. Play was paused in the 90th minute of the match because of fans chanting the Spanish slur for a male sex worker; Mexican fans reportedly use this chant to intimidate the opposing goalkeeper and team. When the chanting did not stop, referees ended the match four minutes early with the U.S. team winning 3-0.
