UN nuclear watchdog probes Libya military claim of finding 2.5 tons of uranium on Chad border

Military forces in eastern Libya say they recently uncovered 2.5 tons of uranium ore that was reported missing by the International Atomic Energy Agency. 

According to media reports, the IAEA is actively working to verify the claim.

Inspectors from the organization earlier this week visited the site to inspect and investigate the situation. 

The 10 drums that contained the ore were discovered near the Libyan border with Chad, according to the Libyan forces' media unit.

The area in which the uranium was found was not in government-controlled territory. 

Experts told the BBC that the now-found uranium couldn't be made into a nuclear weapon in its current state, but it could be used as raw material for a nuclear weapons program.
