A truck collision with multiple vehicles and market traders left at least 51 dead and 32 injured in Kenya, according to reports.

The collision took place on Friday night near the Rift Valley town of Londiani, which is roughly 125 miles northwest of the capital, Nairobi, Fox News reports.

According to the Red Cross, the accident occurred due to a trailer losing control of the wheel, slamming into six cars and running over a pedestrian.

The Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration Kithure Kindiki offered condolences to the families of the victims.

"The fatal road accident at Londiani Junction in Kericho County this Friday evening is a tragedy that marks a dark end to the month of June 2023," he said in a statement, according to Fox News. "Heartfelt condolences to families and friends of the deceased. Speedy recovery to all survivors of the accident, who are receiving medical care in various facilities in Kericho and Nakuru Counties."

The Kenyan Red Cross Society announced the recent setting up of stations at hospitals where people can report loved ones still missing and are offering psychological support for those impacted, according to the New York Post.

It is believed that there are still people in the wreckage, Rift Valley police commander Tom Odera told The Associated Press.

Massive amounts of rainfall put a pause on rescue efforts and people were still trapped in wrecked vehicles on Friday.
