An earthquake registering a magnitude of 7.1 hit Kumamoto in Japan late Tuesday afternoon. The town, which is on the southern part of Japan's main island, experienced damage and injuries. 

The second floor of a shopping center collapsed, trapping an unknown number of people, the Associated Press reported. Rescue operations were underway, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency. 

A tsunami advisory for the nearby western coast of Kumamoto and three neighboring prefectures was temporarily issued but was lifted within two hours, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially registered the earthquake as having a magnitude of 7.1, but it was later revised to 6.8.
