Ukraine brings the war to Russia with incursion into enemy territory
The Ukrainian president said the incursion would 'restore justice' and put pressure on Russian forces
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday acknowledged Ukraine's military incursion into western Russian territory.
Zelensky expressed his hope that the incursion in the city of Kursk would "restore justice" and increase pressure on Russian forces, Reuters reported.
The Ukrainian incursion, which entered its sixth day on Sunday, left southwestern Russia vulnerable while reinforcements scrambled to the area.
Russian authorities responded to the incursion by evacuating residents on Saturday. Belarus, a Russian ally, sent more troops to its border with Ukraine and accused the country of violating its airspace.
In a video address on Saturday, Zelensky described discussing the incursion with Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine's top commander.
"Today, I received several reports from Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi regarding the front lines and our actions to push the war onto the aggressor's territory," Zelensky said. "Ukraine is proving that it can indeed restore justice and is ensuring the exact kind of pressure that is needed - pressure on the aggressor."
The Russian defense ministry reported destroying 32 Ukrainian drones and four Ukrainian ballistic missiles over Russian airspace.
The Ukrainian incursion reportedly caught Russia off-guard. Russia criticized the incursion as "barbaric" and without a military purpose.
