Paris Olympics officially kick off after opening ceremony
The United States is expected to host the next summer Olympics in Los Angeles, in 2028, with Australia hosting the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane. The 2026 Winter Olympics will be held in Milan, Italy.
The 2024 Paris Olympics officially began on Friday night after the completion of the Games' opening ceremony, which saw Olympians arrive on boats along the River Seine.
French President Emmanuel Macron greeted Olympians, alongside International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach. The ceremony also featured the lighting of the Olympic torch, which is typically lit by an athlete from the host nation.
No official games took place on Friday, but preliminary matches in some sports took place earlier in the week. Major events will begin on Saturday, including swimming, U.S. men's beach volleyball versus Cuba, tennis, rowing, and hockey.
