Carlson says Israeli airport security questioning producer after visit 'bizarre,' Huckabee disagrees
"Men who identified themselves as airport security took our passports, hauled our executive producer into a side room and then demanded to know what we spoke to Ambassador Huckabee about," Tucker Carlson said
Conservative podcaster Tucker Carlson called Israeli airport security questioning his producer after their visit to the country "bizarre," as U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee pushed back, claiming it was routine.
Carlson visited Israel on Wednesday to interview Huckabee.
"Greetings from Israel," Carlson posted on X on Wednesday.
Later that day, Carlson told the Daily Mail, "Men who identified themselves as airport security took our passports, hauled our executive producer into a side room and then demanded to know what we spoke to Ambassador Huckabee about. It was bizarre. We’re now out of the country."
Israel and Huckabee pushed back on Carlson's characterization of the questioning.
"Israeli Airports Authority: Contrary to the reports, Tucker Carlson and his entourage were not detained, delayed, or interrogated," the Israel Foreign Ministry posted on X on Wednesday.
"Mr. Carlson and his party were politely asked a few routine questions, in accordance with standard procedures applied to many travelers. The conversation took place in a separate room within the VIP lounge solely to protect their privacy and to avoid conducting such a discussion in public. No unusual incident occurred, and the Israel Airports Authority firmly rejects any other claims."
Huckabee posted on X on Wednesday regarding Carlson's claim, saying, "EVERYONE who comes in/out of Israel (every country for that matter) has passports checked & routinely asked security questions. Even ME going in/out with Diplomatic Passport & Diplomatic Visa."
Also on Wednesday, former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett called out Carlson over his visit.
"Tucker Carlson is a chickensh-t," Bennett posted on X. "The guy who’s been spouting lies about Israel for the past two years, landed today at Ben Gurion airport, took a quick picture in the logistics zone, tweeted it to pretend he’s actually IN Israel (so he can later claim that he’s a serious reporter who toured Israel), didn’t even step foot in country, then made up a story that he’s being supposedly harassed by our security (didn’t happen), whined about it, got back into the private jet and flew off.
"Next time he talks about Israel as if he’s some expert, just remember this guy is a phony!"
Two unnamed sources told the Daily Mail that the Israeli government initially did not want to let Carlson into the country, prompting the State Department to negotiate.
The Israeli government ultimately decided not to prevent Carlson from entering the country in order to avoid a "diplomatic incident," according to a Channel 13 report.
A spokesman for the U.S. embassy in Israel denied that Carlson was detained, instead saying that he "received the same passport control questions that countless visitors to Israel, including Ambassador Huckabee and other diplomats, receive as part of normal entrance and exit from Israel."
"It is not accurate that Israel only was going to let Tucker into the country for the interview," the spokesman added.
"The only engagement the Embassy had with Israel about his visit was to coordinate his private plane landing as part of facilitating a seamless visit. It was Tucker who chose to only come into the country for a few hours and depart. And Tucker received the same positive treatment of any visitors to Israel."
Last week, Carlson accused Huckabee of not ensuring proper protections for Christians in Israel.
Huckabee, who previously worked with Carlson at Fox News, responded by inviting him to Israel for a discussion, which Carlson accepted.
