Ex-Israeli ambassador warns Lebanon may be dragged into war between Israel and Hezbollah
"There is no Lebanese army," former Ambassador Michael Oren said. "It's part of Hezbollah."
Former Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren warned that if a war breaks out between Israel and Hezbollah, Lebanon would be dragged into the conflict.
"I think in the next... if there's a coming conflict... that Israel [will] actually declare war against Lebanon itself," Oren said on the "John Solomon Reports" podcast. Such a conflict, he said, "is a different type of war... a state against state war as opposed to a state against organization war with a different legal framework."
Oren explained that while the United States distinguishes between Hezbollah and the Lebanese state, Israel does not and believes there isn't a country called Lebanon, but a country called Hezbollah, and that "there is no Lebanese army. It's part of Hezbollah."
Both Israel and Hezbollah leaders have said they don't want a war with each other, according to recent reports, though the risk of miscalculation and potential escalation remains.
Hezbollah reportedly has 10 times the military capacity of Hamas, which is currently fighting Israel in the Gaza Strip.
"Israel will take measures for example to prevent the resupply of Hezbollah through Lebanese ports, Lebanese airports and there will be ramifications," Oren said.
