Four IDF soldiers killed by Hezbollah drone strike in Israel: report

Four Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers were killed in a drone strike from Hezbollah, according to reports over the weekend. 

Media outlets in Israel are reporting that two drones were launched from Lebanon and one was intercepted. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack.

Authorities in Israel said that four soldiers were killed and almost 60 people were injured in Israel following the Hezbollah drone strike, according to Fox News. It wasn't immediately clear how many of the injured were military members or civilians. 

"Yesterday, a UAV launched by the Hezbollah terrorist organization hit an army base," the IDF said in a statement, according to the outlet. "[Four] IDF soldiers were killed in the incident. The IDF shares in the grief of the bereaved families and will continue to accompany them."

Israel conducted two strikes in Beirut on Thursday that reportedly killed 22 people. Hezbollah said it was retaliating for the strikes by targeting an Israeli military training camp.

It was the second time in two days that a drone struck Israel.

The U.S. announced on Sunday that it has authorized sending a THAAD anti-missile system to Israel along with a deployment of military personnel to help strengthen Israel’s defense.

THAAD stands for Terminal High Altitude Area Defense. It is designed to defend against long-, medium- and short-range ballistic missiles, according to NBC.

"The THAAD Battery will augment Israel’s integrated air defense system," the Pentagon said in a statement. "This action underscores the United States’ ironclad commitment to the defense of Israel, and to defend Americans in Israel, from any further ballistic missile attacks by Iran."
