The government of the Maldives said Sunday it would ban Israelis from entering over anger about the war in Gaza.

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu said the decision to ban Israeli passport holders comes following a recommendation from the Cabinet.

The president also appointed a "special envoy to assess Palestinian needs," and set up a campaign to fundraise for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, according to an announcement from his office.

Last year, nearly 11,000 Israelis visited the Maldives, which is known for luxury resorts, according to The Associated Press.
