The Trump administration has reportedly told its allies in the Middle East that it will not involve itself militarily in the ongoing hostilities between Iran and Israel unless the Islamic Republic directly targets Americans.

Thus far, the U.S. has helped Israel shoot down Iranian missiles and drones to defend its territory, but has not committed to offensive maneuvers. Axios reported on the administration's messages to security partners, citing "two sources from countries that received that U.S. message."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has encouraged the United States to get more involved in the conflict, claiming eliminating Iran as a potential nuclear power would benefit the country because Iran does not like the U.S.

"Today, it's Tel Aviv. Tomorrow, it's New York," he warned. "Look, I understand 'America First.' I don't understand 'America Dead.'"
