Frankel began his tenure at The Times as the Columbia University campus correspondent at the age of 19. He went on to spend four decades at the newspaper, where he rose to executive editor from 1986 to 1994. During the 40-year stint, he won a Pulitzer for international reporting, for his coverage of former President Richard Nixon’s visit to China.
