Left-wing news outlet fundraises off of Clarence Thomas coverage
A prominent conservative on the court, Thomas has fielded calls for his impeachment since the ProPublica report, though such calls have failed to gain significant traction outside of the political left.
Left-wing news outlet The Intercept is soliciting donations to fund its investigations into Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas and his relationship with GOP megadonor Harlan Crow.
An email solicitation from the outlet on Wednesday pointed to its reporting that Crow maintains dual citizenship in St. Kitts and Nevis. The email does not allege wrongdoing, but heavily emphasizes the country's status as a tax haven and cited "tax experts" asserting that people who seek "foreign passports in such tax havens often include fugitives, members of organized crime, and sanctioned oligarchs," seemingly alluding to possible illicit activity on Crow's part.
"The Intercept’s reporting team is following the money to uncover the full extent of Thomas’s corruption and Crow’s questionable dealings," the email read. "But it’s clear that exposing the full nature of their relationship will require a long-term reporting effort, from developing sources and connecting with whistleblowers to unraveling complex financial information designed to hide the truth."
"Will you make a donation to The Intercept and help support our ongoing efforts to expose corruption of the Supreme Court?" it then prompts recipients. Below the line is a link to donate set amounts.
Thomas and Crow have been in headlines since a ProPublica report highlighted the pair's taking expensive vacations together at the billionaire's expense. Subsequent reporting has highlighted Crow's funding of the education of Thomas's great-grandnephew as well. Thomas has denied any wrongdoing.
