Hunter Biden’s artwork was purchased by Democratic donors, ethics agreement a sham, Comer says
The Oversight Committee's account confirms previous reporting by Just the News and leaves unanswered questions about the White House ethics arrangement and Hunter Biden lawyer Kevin Morris.
On Tuesday, the House Oversight Committee learned in testimony from the owner of Hunter Biden’s art gallery that a majority of the first son’s artwork was purchased by Joe Biden’s Democratic donors.
The art gallery owner—Georges Bergès—also told the committee that he never communicated with the White House about the supposed ethics agreement that the Biden Administration previously claimed was governing Hunter Biden’s “work within his profession,” which included his art career.
“The Biden White House appears to have deceived the American people about facilitating an ethics agreement governing the sale of Hunter Biden’s art. Hunter Biden’s gallerist never had any communication with the White House about such an agreement to make sure there was any sort of ethics compliance at all, and he provided information to the committee revealing how Hunter Biden’s amateur art career is an ethics nightmare,” Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said in a press release after the art gallery owner’s testimony.
“The vast majority of Hunter Biden’s art has been purchased by Democrat donors, one of whom was appointed by President Biden to a prestigious commission after she purchased Hunter Biden’s art for tens of thousands of dollars shortly after Joe Biden’s inauguration. The White House has a lot of explaining to do about misleading the American people,” Comer continued.
Then-White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters in July 2021 that “a system has been established that allows for Hunter Biden to work in his profession within reasonable safeguards […] But all interactions regarding the selling of art and the setting of prices will be handled by a professional gallerist, adhering to the highest industry standards. And any offer out of the normal course would be rejected out of hand.”
However, Bergès told the committee that a majority of Hunter Biden’s art was purchased by Democratic donors, what Comer called an “ethics nightmare.”
Comer confirmed that the committee discovered that Lanette Phillips, a Hollywood producer and Biden fundraiser host, connected Hunter Biden with Bergès as Just the News previously reported.
Comer also revealed that Kevin Morris—the Hollywood lawyer who has given at least $6 million to Biden in the form of loans and art purchases—paid at least $875,000 to acquire Hunter Biden’s artwork, according to Bergès’ testimony.
Another Democratic donor, Elizabeth Hirsh Naftali, purchased a piece of Hunter Biden’s art for $42,000 in February of 2021, right after President Biden’s inauguration. She was then appointed to the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad. In December 2022, Hirsh Naftali purchased more Hunter Biden artwork, spending $52,000, according to the committee’s report of the testimony.
