President Donald Trump on Friday said that there is a “very good chance” of Russia and Ukraine going through with a 30-day ceasefire deal.

"We had very good and productive discussions with President Vladimir Putin of Russia yesterday, and there is a very good chance that this horrible, bloody war can finally come to an end — BUT, AT THIS VERY MOMENT, THOUSANDS OF UKRAINIAN TROOPS ARE COMPLETELY SURROUNDED BY THE RUSSIAN MILITARY, AND IN A VERY BAD AND VULNERABLE POSITION," Trump wrote on TRUTH Social.

The White House confirmed that U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff was the one who spoke to Putin and not Trump, according to The Guardian.

"I have strongly requested to President Putin that their lives be spared," Trump's post concluded. "This would be a horrible massacre, one not seen since World War II. God bless them all!!!"

Witkoff met with Putin on Thursday night to discuss potential negotiations to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.

U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said that there is reason to have "cautious optimism."

“Of course both sides are going to have their demands, and of course both sides are going to have to make some compromises, and the shuttle diplomacy of going back and forth is happening," he said during a Fox News interview.
