American swimmer Gretchen Walsh sets Olympic record in 100-meter butterfly

Walsh attends the University of Virginia and competes at the NCAA level.

American swimmer Gretchen Walsh set the Olympic record on Saturday in the 100-meter butterfly.

Walsh's record came in at 55.38, unseating the previous record holder, Sarah Sjöström, according to USA Today.

Walsh set a world record in June at 55.18 during the Olympic swimming trials in Indiana. 

Walsh attends the University of Virginia and competes at the NCAA level.

The 100m butterfly final will take place on Sunday at 2:40 p.m. ET.
