Competitor in the CrossFit Games dies during swimming event in Texas
As of now the cause of death is not confirmed.
An athlete competing in the 2024 CrossFit Games died Thursday during a swimming event in Texas.
“CrossFit is deeply saddened by the death of a CrossFit Games competitor during the swimming portion of Individual Event 1 at the 2024 CrossFit Games,” CrossFit Games wrote on the social media platform, X.
The individual who died is Lazar Dukic, 28, from Serbia, according to a local outlet. As of now the cause of death is not confirmed.
“We are fully cooperating with authorities and doing everything we can to support the family at this time," CrossFit Games continued in its statement. "The remainder of today’s events have been suspended. The well-being of competitors is our first priority and we are heartbroken by this tragic event.”
Local media reports that Dukic's body was retrieved from Marine Creek Lake. Prior to that, the Fort Worth Fire Department arrived to conduct a search-and-rescue operation at around 8 a.m.
The body was retrieved roughly one hour later.
Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker wrote on Facebook that there would be grief counselors available following the "tragic loss."
