The motorist who earlier this month hit an off-duty Las Vegas police officer head on and killed him was in the U.S. illegally from Mexico, Fox News reported Tuesday.

The driver in the Dec. 12 accident was Fernando Jimenez-Jimenez, 31, a citizen of Mexico, according to Fox News.

Jimenez-Jimenez was reportedly driving on the wrong side of the road on an Interstate in Nevada when he struck the Toyota being driven by of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Officer Colton Pulsipher, who was coming home from work.

Both men died in the crash.

Nevada State Police told local media that Jimenez-Jimenez had alcohol and marijuana containers in his car. However, toxicology reports are still pending.

"Officer Pulsipher served with courage, integrity, and dedication, always putting the safety of others before his own," the police department said in a statement following his death.
