Olympics strips U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles of bronze, U.S. Olympic Committee vows appeal

U.S. Olympics officials vowed to appeal a ruling that stripped U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles of her bronze medal for floor exercise.

The Olympics' Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) stripped Chiles of her medal by voiding an on-floor appeal from her coach, The Associated Press reported.

The on-floor appeal, which bumped Chiles up to third place, came four seconds after the one-minute time limit for challenging scoring.

The International Gymnastics Federation promised to respect the CAS decision on Saturday. On Sunday, the International Olympic Committee confirmed the ruling and reallocated the bronze to Romania's Ana Barbosu.

"We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be addressed," the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) said.

USOPC has two possible avenues for appeal: the Swiss Tribunal, Switzerland's highest court, or the European Court of Human Rights.
