Thousands evacuate their homes in Greece due to wildfires

The Civil Protection in Greece has reported no injuries as of now.

Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes and hotels due to wildfires sweeping through the Greek island of Rhodes. 

Roughly 2,000 people were moved by sea to another location, according to the BBC

Private boats joined the Greek Coast Guard to help evacuate residents and tourists. 

Deputy fire chief Ioannis Artophios said a ferry is being used to transport people as well. Some are staying at an indoor stadium on the island away from the fire, according to the island's deputy mayor.

Travel company TUI told the BBC that some of its hotels have been affected and are relocating customers.

Firefighters from Slovakia came to Rhodes Saturday to help battle the fires.

The Civil Protection in Greece has reported no injuries as of now.
