US cargo ship hit by Houthi ballistic missile, Pentagon

A U.S. cargo ship was hit Monday in the Red Sea by a ballistic missile fired by the Iranian-backed rebel group the Houthis, according to the Pentagon. 

The reported attack is another incident in the international shipping channel shortly after the start of the Israel-Hamas war in early-October 2023. In response, the U.S. has fired missiles over the past several days into Yemen, where the group, which sympathizes with the Palestinian-affiliate Hamas, purportedly has headquarters.   

The strike hit the Gibraltar Eagle and no injuries have been reported, according to U.S. Central Command. 

“As a result of the impact the vessel suffered limited damage to a cargo hold but is stable and is heading out of the area,” the group said, according to CNN. “All seafarers onboard the vessel are confirmed to be uninjured.” 

On Thursday, the U.S. and the U.K. launched joint airstrikes in Yemen and killed five people, according to Houthi leadership.

President Joe Biden said the strikes were necessary due to American vessels in the Red Sea being targeted.
