A U.S. soldier whom Russian authorities have detained on allegations of theft will remain in the country's custody, state media has reported.

The soldier, Gordon Black, was arrested in the city Vladivostok. U.S. officials say Black went to Russia to visit his longtime girlfriend. He was later detained and accused of stealing from her.

Black lost an appeal of his detention and will remain in custody until July 2, according to ABC News.

RIA Novosti, a state media outlet, reported that Black has admitted guilt and is cooperating with investigators.

Another American held in Russian custody is Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich.

Gershkovich was detained by Russia's Federal Security Service on espionage charges in March of 2023. He was accused of "acting on the instructions of the American side" and gathering secrets about the Russian military.
