Several House Republican say either they or a family members have received a death threat for opposing fellow GOP Congressman Jim Jordan's bid to become the next speaker of the GOP-led House.

Jordan, a hero of the Republican Party's hard right, is about 20 votes shy of the 217 he needs to become speaker and will make a third try Friday morning to get the votes on the House floor.

Oklahoma Rep. Don Bacon, a Republican centrist, says he is among those who has been targeted with such threats, according to the Associated Press

Bacon says he has received harassing text messages and phone calls and that his wife has slept with a loaded gun near her bedside. Every GOP House member who has voted against Jordan has reportedly received angry phone calls and messages.

“Bullying don’t work,” said Bacon on Thursday, about 17 days after about eight of the House Republican Conference's hard-right members ousted California GOP Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker.

Georgia GOP Rep. Drew Ferguson says his family is also among those that started receiving death threats for his vote against Jordan, the wire service also reports.

In addition, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks says she received “credible death threats” after voting against Jordan on Wednesday.

Jordan has condemned the threats.

“Stop. It’s abhorrent,” he said on social media.
