Trump nominee for US surgeon general Casey Means faces grilling in Senate confirmation hearing
The confirmation hearing was rescheduled from last October, when Casey Means went into labor the day she was set to appear
Dr. Casey Means, President Trump's nominee for U.S. surgeon general, said in her Senate confirmation hearing Tuesday that she is supportive of vaccines.
Means, also an ally of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., is testifying before the Senate's Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.
"I have very serious questions about the ability of Dr. Means to be the kind of surgeon general this country needs," said Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, who serves as the top Democrat on the committee.
She specifically said she backs vaccines for measles at levels not seen in decades in the U.S, but suggested that each patient-vaccine relationship is unique.
"I'm supportive of vaccination. I do believe that each patient, mother, parent, needs to have a conversation with their pediatrician about any medication they're putting in their body and their children's body," Means said.
At least two previous surgeons general have publicly suggested Means is not fit for the job, according to PBS.org
