Comer blasts Hunter Biden attorney over first son's refusal to appear at public hearing
Earlier this week, the first son's attorney, Abbe Lowell, informed the panel that he would not participate, citing in part a court date in California scheduled for the following day.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer on Friday excoriated first son Hunter Biden over his refusal to appear at a public hearing with his former business associates.
Earlier this week, the first son's attorney, Abbe Lowell, informed the panel that he would not participate, citing in part a court date in California scheduled for the following day. The March 20 hearing is set to include former Biden business associates Devon Archer, Tony Bobulinski, and Jason Galanis.
Comer on Friday, responded to Lowell, rejecting the pretense of scheduling conflict and highlighting that Hunter Biden himself had demanded a public hearing.
"Only a few months ago, Hunter Biden demanded—outside the United States Capitol—a public hearing where he would answer questions in front of the American people," Comer wrote. "After facing questions during a deposition, Mr. Biden decided to reverse his position. The only conclusion that one can reach is that Mr. Biden knows his public testimony would not withstand scrutiny."
"The hearing you describe as a 'planned-for-media event' is exactly what Mr. Biden has previously demanded. Indeed, Mr. Biden will be afforded the opportunity to provide his perspective alongside those with whom he has worked most closely," Comer went on. He further contended that such a hearing would present Biden with an opportunity to clarify evidence he claims the House has mischaracterized.
"Your scheduling concern—that you and Mr. Biden are due to appear in court the day after the hearing—is undercut by Mr. Biden’s appearance at the Committee’s January 10, 2024, business meeting in Washington, D.C. and then appearing in court the next day in California on January 11, 2024," he further asserted.
"President Biden has not been truthful regarding his family’s business and his own participation in it; it is time for Mr. Biden to decide whether he is going to perpetuate that dishonesty to protect his father or come clean to the American people," Comer concluded. "Mr. Biden has said previously he wanted to speak publicly; the Committee is offering him that opportunity, as I said I would."
