Congress has 10 days to pass a spending bill to avert a government shutdown

Congress has 10 days to pass a continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown before lawmakers leave for the holiday break.

Dec. 20 is the deadline to avert a shutdown. The passage of such a measure is expected, despite the opposition of many members of the House Freedom Caucus.

Members of Congress have proposed a stopgap that will run through March of 2025, according to The Hill.

Both Republicans and Democrats are requesting more money to help with recovery efforts from Hurricanes Milton and Helene.

House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole, R-Okla., said that while aid for the disasters could be put in a continuing resolution, it should also be dealt with “as a stand-alone."

Social Security and IRS funding are other items that are likely to be funded in the next continuing resolution.
