Congress returns with top priority of passing another coronavirus stimulus package
The enhanced unemployment benefits that Congress passed in the spring are set to expire July 31
Congress returns Monday from an extended July Fourth break with its focus on finding an agreement on the next coronavirus relief package – with the federal government’s $600 weekly unemployment bonus for millions of Americans set to expire by the end of the month.
The Democrat-controlled House in May passed the $3 trillion Heroes Act. However, the GOP-controlled Senate has yet to take up the measure.
Senate Republicans have suggested any compromise measure will need to include money for state and local governments and virus-related liability protections for schools, businesses, frontline medical workers and others.
President Trump has indicated that he wants the measure to include payroll tax cuts. He will reportedly meet Monday with the top congressional Republicans Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
Congress has already passed trillions in stimulus money for Americans and businesses economically impacted by the pandemic under the CARES Act.
The package now on Capitol Hill is likely the last before Election Day. Congress has about 10 days now on Capitol Hill before August break.
