House nixes hearing with D.C. Mayor Bowser after clearing of GW encampment

The House on Wednesday canceled a hearing at which Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was supposed to testify, after police cleared up the pro-Palestinian encampment at George Washington University. 

The encampment was cleared by D.C. police at around 3 a.m. on Wednesday and 33 people were arrested, according to Axios. It isn't clear how many of those arrested were college students at the university. 

During the clearing, some demonstrators clashed with the police and were pepper sprayed. The incident happened shortly after demonstrators camped outside the home of George Washington University President Ellen Granberg.

House Republicans had visited the encampment last week and called for its clearing.

Bowser earlier this week agreed to testify about the encampment. The House Oversight Committee had sought her testimony over the Metropolitan Police Department's reported refusal to help the university clear out the encampment.
