Rep. Greene alleges Speaker Johnson is considering unprecedented change to motion to vacate rules
"Kevin McCarthy while he was starring down the barrel of a loaded gun, he never made a move like this behind closed doors and made deals with Democrats to change the motion to vacate," Greene said.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., alleged during a Thursday press conference that House Speaker Mike Johnson is working with Democrats to change motion to vacate rules, an idea that has resurfaced after he decided to move forward with a Ukraine aid bill, despite pushback from some GOP colleagues.
"Mike Johnson owes our entire conference a meeting and if he wants to change the motion to vacate, he needs to come before the Republican conference that elected him and tell us of his intentions and tell us what this rule change to the motion to vacate is going to be," Greene said.
She said her GOP colleagues have heard that Johnson will be attempting to change the motion to vacate rules and said it was "unprecedented."
"Kevin McCarthy while he was staring down the barrel of a loaded gun, he never made a move like this behind closed doors and made deals with Democrats to change the motion to vacate," Greene said. "We're hearing that's exactly what Mike Johnson is doing."
Johnson hinted last month that the House would amend provisions to remove the speaker, following former House Speaker McCarthy's ousting last October.
Greene went on to slam Johnson for supporting aid to Ukraine and being the deciding vote on FISA.
"He really crossed a line with most Republicans across the country with what he did on the FISA vote last week-being the final deciding vote against warrants and then passing FISA," she said. "And now he's moving forward [with] making funding to Ukraine....$60 billion to Ukraine his top priority...the most important thing he can do in a speakership and he's willing to work with Democrats to make that deal and get that done and change the motion to vacate to do it."
Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., has signed on to Greene's motion to vacate resolution. The House Rules Committee is meeting on Thursday about the foreign aid package Johnson released which includes Ukraine and Israel funding.
"Unprecedented: Speaker Johnson plans to pass the rule for the $100 billion foreign aid package using Democrats on the Rules Committee," Massie wrote on X Thursday. "Is he working for Democrats or Republicans now?"
Johnson said he is focused on governing and not on threats to oust him.
