Conservative House Freedom Caucus argues next spending bill should prevent non-citizens from voting

The conservative House Freedom Caucus is advocating for House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republican leaders to work to "prevent non-citizens from voting" in U.S. elections as part of the upcoming federal spending battle in September.

Federal appropriations run out on September 30. 
 
“The House Freedom Caucus believes that House Republicans should return to Washington to continue the work of passing all 12 appropriations bills to cut spending and advance our policy priorities," the caucus said in a news release. 

"If unsuccessful, in the inevitability that Congress considers a Continuing Resolution, government funding should be extended into early 2025 to avoid a lame duck omnibus that preserves Democrat spending and policies well into the next administration," the lawmakers added.
 
The caucus said it is pushing for the next spending bill to include the language of the SAVE Act, which is aimed at preventing "non-citizens from voting to preserve free and fair elections in light of the millions of illegal aliens imported by the Biden-Harris administration over the last four years."

The bill would require proof of citizenship during the voter registration process.

Some localities such as Washington, D.C. and San Francisco have passed measures that allow non-citizens to vote in local elections.
