New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker on Tuesday night broke the record for the longest speech given on the Senate floor, surpassing former Republican Sen. Strom Thurmond's record of 24 hours and 18 minutes.

Thurmond gave his groundbreaking speech in 1957, in opposition of the Civil Rights Act.

Booker, whose speech was a protest of the current Trump administration, passed Thurmond's record at 7:19 p.m. Eastern. The senator claimed he would be speaking for as long as he was "physically able."

“Tonight, I rise with the intention of getting in some good trouble,” Booker said in his opening remarks. “I rise tonight because I believe sincerely that our country is in crisis, and I believe not in a partisan sense, because so many of the people who have been reaching out to my office in pain, in fear, having their lives upended, so many of them identify themselves as Republicans.”

The speech, which was not solely Booker because it had appearances by other Democratic senators, is not considered a traditional filibuster because it is not attempting to thwart the confirmation of any nominees or prevent a legislation from passing.

A staffer of the senator was arrested at the Capitol on Monday night, after he carried a firearm on Capitol grounds.

Booker is not the first senator to give a marathon speech in the past decade. Oregon Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley, Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy, and Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul have all given marathon speeches in recent years.

Merkley's speech was the most recent as a boycott against Neil Gorsuch's confirmation to the Supreme Court in 2017, according to CNN.
