Sen. Ted Cruz is calling on the House to investigate what he says is "direct evidence" of President Joe Biden using his position to enrich himself and his son, Hunter Biden, and said the time to look into impeaching the president is "right now."

On Friday's episode of "Verdict with Ted Cruz," co-host Ben Ferguson asked the Texas Republican senator at what point an investigation into the first son turned into an impeachment effort against the president himself.

"It is right now," Cruz responded.

His comments come after IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley Jr. told Congress that his agency obtained a WhatsApp message from Hunter Biden to Chinese businessman Henry Zhao in which the younger Biden said his father was involved in making foreign deals.

"Look, this WhatsApp is direct evidence of Joe Biden abusing his government power to enrich his son, and, assuming 10% for the big guy, to enrich himself," Cruz also said on his podcast. "Of course, the House needs to investigate it, but the stunning thing is what the IRS whistleblower says is [the Justice Department], Merrick Garland prevented an investigation even into this message."

Garland has denied interference in the Hunter Biden probe.

While congressional Republicans have been investigating Hunter Biden for years, the first son pleaded guilty last week to two federal tax crimes and admitted to a gun charge in a deal to avoid prison time.
