Elissa Slotkin to lead Democratic response to Trump address to Congress

Congressional Democratic leadership on Thursday announced that Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin, a rising star in Democratic politics, will deliver the party's response to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address next month.
House Speaker Mike Johnon invited Trump last month to give the first State of the Union speech of his second term to a joint session of Congress on March 4, which the president has accepted.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries made the announcement in a press release, praising Slotkin as someone who has "dedicated her life" to serving Americans.
“Elissa Slotkin has dedicated her life to defending our country, serving the American people, and fighting for Michigan,” Schumer said. “As nothing short of a rising star in our party, Elissa has proven she can get things done: whether it’s fighting for lower costs, affordable healthcare, standing up for our economic and national security, or advocating for all families across Michigan."
Slotkin responded to the announcement by stating that she was "looking forward" to giving the Democratic rebuttal.
"I'm looking forward to speaking directly to the American people next week. The public expects leaders to level with them on what’s actually happening in our country," she wrote on X. "From our economic security to our national security, we’ve got to chart a way forward that improves people’s lives in the country we all love, I look forward to laying that out."
