Fetterman expresses support for House GOP's CR, shutdown would 'plunge the country into chaos'

Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman on Thursday appeared inclined to help pass the House Republicans' six-months Continuing Resolution (CR), stating that a government shutdown would be worse by risking a recession.

Senate Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have tried to rally support for a 30-day CR, but the House already passed a six-months resolution on Tuesday that would keep the government funded through September.

Fetterman posted on social media that he will never support a government shutdown and that the 30-day alternative will undoubtedly fail in the Republican-led Senate.

"Shut the government down, plunge the country into chaos, risk a recession, or exchange cloture for a 30 day CR that 100% fails," he posted on X. "The House GOP CR will then pass the Senate because it only needs 51 votes. Total theater is neither honest with constituents nor a winning argument."

Fetterman is the only Democrat so far to publicly express support for the resolution, but Independent Maine Sen. Angus King, who usually votes with Democrats, said the decision on whether to support the six-month stopgap was difficult.

Congress has until Friday to pass the CR that would keep the government funded, or else face a government shutdown.
