GOP Rep. Cory Mills introduces articles of impeachment for Defense Secretary over Afghanistan exit
"It’s not enough for Congress to hold committee hearings," Rep. Mills said. "We must start taking real action to address the complete failure of this administration."
Florida GOP Rep. Cory Mills on Friday introduced articles of impeachment for Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin.
"High-level officials in this administration blatantly ignored intel that Americans and our allied partners in Kabul would be left behind in harm’s way unless the U.S. corrected course in our withdrawal," Mills wrote on X, the platform previously called Twitter. "As a result, nearly 200 people, including 13 American service members, were murdered at Abbey Gate in Kabul, Afghanistan two years ago."
"Because of this clear dereliction of duty, today I am introducing articles of impeachment for Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin," the post continued.
The United States withdrew its troops from Afghanistan in August 2021, resulting in the Taliban retaking the country and 13 United States soldiers dying.
Rep. Mills has spoken out multiple times about how the Biden administration needed to be held accountable for the botched withdrawal in Afghanistan.
"I think that there still needs to be accountability for the State Department, for Secretary Lloyd Austin, the Department of Defense and for others for this failed withdrawal that abandoned Americans and cost Americans their lives," he said on an episode of the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show.
The impeachment articles have been supported by some members of Congress, including Colorado GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert.
"There must be accountability for the embarrassing withdrawal in Afghanistan that killed hundreds of people and thirteen American soldiers," Boebert wrote on X.
Mills called on Congress to act and not just have meetings on what occurred in Afghanistan.
"It’s not enough for Congress to hold committee hearings," he said. "We must start taking real action to address the complete failure of this administration."
