Former Connecticut governor and US senator Lowell Weicker dies at 92
He is remembered for co-authoring the Americans with Disabilities Act, which passed 18 months after he left the Senate.
Lowell P. Weicker Jr., who served three terms as Connecticut’s last Republican senator and then became a third-party governor in the state, died Wednesday. He was 92.
His family announced his death at Middlesex Hospital, according to CT Mirror.
Weicker stepped away from his role as an elected politician in 1995 after serving as Connecticut’s 85th governor. He also spent two decades in D.C. where he fought for the separation of church and state, abortion rights and funding for social services and research.
He is also remembered for co-authoring the Americans with Disabilities Act, which became law in 1990, 18 months after he left the Senate.
When he became governor, he won as a member of A Connecticut Party, a political party which he had personally formed.
