The Senate late Saturday overcame a Democrat blockade to confirm former judge and Fox News personality Jeanine Pirro to be the top federal prosecutor in the nation's capital.

The vote was 50-45 as Republicans muscled enough votes to approve Pirro as the permanent U.S. attorney in Washington D.C.

President Donald Trump had named her earlier this year and she had been serving as an interim head of the office for weeks.

The vote came after senators failed to reach a deal to overcome a long-standing Democrat hold on more than 100 of Trump's appointees, many of them judges and prosecutors.

Pirro served as a prosecutor and judge in West hester County in New York City's suburbs before gaining fame as a hard-nosed Fox News commentator.
