Democrat Ruben Gallego was declared early Wednesday the winner of Arizona’s U.S. Senate race, defeating Republican Kari Lake and further limiting GOP gains in the chamber.

The Associated Press and other news organizations declared Gallego the winner a week after the 2024 election ended, meaning the Democrat will be his state’s first Latino U.S. senator even as Donald Trump won the presidential race in his state.

With the final undecided Senate race settled, Republicans will have a 53–47 majority in the Senate next year

“Gracias, Arizona!” Gallego wrote on X after the announcement.
