House Majority Leader Scalise says diagnosed with blood cancer, 'very treatable'
Scalise said he started treatment and will continue it for the next several months.
Republican House Majority Leader Steve Scalise on Tuesday said he was diagnosed with a "very treatable" form of blood cancer.
Scalise, who represents Louisiana's First District, said he already started treatment for the cancer, known as Multiple Myeloma, and he will continue it for the next several months.
"I expect to work through this period and intend to return to Washington, continuing my work as Majority Leader and serving the people of Louisiana’s First Congressional District," he said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
"I am incredibly grateful we were able to detect this early and that this cancer is treatable," he also wrote.
Well wishes for Scalise, the No. 2 House Republican, poured in from fellow members of Congress after his announcement.
Scalise has overcome health battles before. In 2017, he was seriously injured by a gunman targeting Republicans at a Congressional Baseball Game practice.
