GOP Rep. Mark Green will seek reelection in 2024 instead of retiring
The House Republican conference is facing considerable turnover in the next Congress, with many lawmakers – including several powerful committee chairs – opting against reelection.
House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green, R-Tenn., has confirmed he will seek re-election after previously announcing plans to exit Congress at the end of his current term.
Green confirmed his reelection plans to The Hill on Thursday. He initially announced his retirement on Feb. 14, saying that "[o]ur country–and our Congress–is broken beyond most means of repair. I have come to realize our fight is not here within Washington, our fight is with Washington."
Just weeks later, however, reports emerged that he was reconsidering his plans, in part due to the urging of his fellow Tennessee Republicans. Former President Donald Trump on Thursday, urged Green to seek reelection.
"Mark Green has had lots of options because of his political talents, and the great job he has done as a Congressman, but given the fantastic work he’s doing as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, I hope he runs for Re-Election to the U.S. House of Representatives. If he does, he has my Complete and Total Endorsement!" he posted on Truth Social.
