Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley sent a letter to Verizon on Thursday, seeking information on its decision to hand over senators' phone toll records to Special Counsel Jack Smith and its failure to disclose its actions to affected members of Congress.

Grassley has led an investigation into Smith and his alleged efforts to prosecute President Donald Trump and his allies, which included the revelation that Smith subpoenaed phone records of multiple GOP senators during the Arctic Frost investigation, including Tennessee Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn and Florida GOP Sen. Rick Scott.

The House Judiciary Committee has also launched a probe into Smith's and the Biden administration's FBI's Arctic Frost investigation. 

“Jack Smith oversaw a sweeping and unprecedented investigation that swept up records from hundreds of Republican entities, including the phone toll records and text messages from myself and dozens of my colleagues,” Grassley said in a statement. “Congress deserves to know the full picture of how Smith carried out Arctic Frost so it never happens again. 

"As part of our investigation, we need to fully understand what Verizon knew about Smith’s subpoenas, when they became aware members were impacted and why the company didn’t inform members like they were supposed to," he added.

The letter comes after Grassley asked Verizon in 2023 to search for all requests or orders made by the Justice Department or any federal law enforcement agency between January 2016 and October 2023 related to Senate devices and Crossfire Hurricane. 

Verizon failed to include the subpoena requests that Smith issued for Arctic Frost in 2023 in its response to Grassley's request that same year. Grassley and several colleagues are asking for clarification on why the subpoenas were not in the 2023 response.

Republican Sens. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin; Ted Cruz of Texas; Tommy Tuberville of Alabama; Ashley Moody of Florida and Mike Lee of Utah were among the co-signers of the letter.
