Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley R-IA said Monday that the committee has formally received President Donald Trump's nomination of acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to officially serve in the post.

The official nomination comes after Trump teased the move last week. Former Attorney General Pam Bondi stepped down from her post in March and Trump immediately moved Blanche, who was the deputy attorney general, into the role in an acting capacity.

Grassley said the Senate committee is already working to process the nomination and expressed support for Blanche.

"Maintaining the Department of Justice’s ability to protect Americans from crime and hold criminals accountable is essential for the safety of American families," Grassley said in a statement. "I’ve worked well with Acting Attorney General Blanche for more than a year and appreciate his commitment to transparency and support for law enforcement.

"Blanche is well-qualified and has shown his dedication to restoring law and order across our country," he added.

The acting attorney general has maintained that he did not ask for the nomination but would be honored to serve as attorney general if confirmed.

"I love working for President Trump," Blanche said in April. "It's the greatest honor of a lifetime, and if President Trump chooses to keep me as acting, that's an honor. If he chooses to nominate me, that's an honor."
