Homeland Chairman Green: Biden, Mayorkas using CBP One app to hide illegal migration
“Since January 2023, Secretary Mayorkas has been engaging in a shell game at the expense of the American people by painting otherwise unlawful border crossings as legal entries," Chairman Green says.
House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green accused Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of using the "CBP One app" to hide the amount of illegal migration taking place after Title 42 was lifted, calling it a "shell game."
The Biden administration is reportedly using the app to admit about 40,000 asylum seekers per month.
Green said the Biden administration is abusing the CBP One app at ports of entry, calling it "just a new iteration of catch-and-release — and one that may only further empower cartels, who now have a new human smuggling tool at their disposal."
Many House Republicans have called for Mayorkas to be impeached over his handling of the border.
Green released a preliminary report on Wednesday that makes the case for "an oversight investigation into the conduct" of Mayorkas.
“In just over two years of Secretary Mayorkas’ leadership, the number of encounters at our Southwest border has doubled compared to the previous administration. More than 1.5 million known gotaways have entered our country. The drug cartels control our Southwest border and are flooding our communities with fentanyl,” Green said in a statement. “This is not a coincidence — this is a dereliction of duty."
The committee held a hearing on Wednesday to "examine Secretary Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty."
During the hearing, House Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member Bennie Thompson argued that Biden's immigration polices are working since illegal encounters have dipped since Title 42 was lifted.
"Republicans have constantly falsely accused Secretary Mayorkas of being derelict in his duty to secure the border even though, as I said in my opening statement, border encounters have dropped sharp since the Biden administration terminated Title 42 last month," he said.
Green said there is "zero doubt" that Mayorkas has been derelict in his duty.
"What we have found thus far is damning," he said. "To date, our investigation has found that he has violated the laws of the United States, abused the authority of his office and betrayed the public trust through repeated dishonest and misleading statements to the American people while also demonstrating gross incompetence."
